LEUSD Students Return Monday, Year Will Likely Not Be Extended

Students will head back to the classroom late due to the Holy Fire.

From LEUSD: ALL LEUSD students will return to school on Monday, August 20, 2018. As of 5:30 p.m. today, August 16, nine schools plus the Heald Academy have been inspected and certified for immediate staff occupancy, enabling those site employees to return to work to prepare for opening day next week.Certification is a formal requirement for occupancy under the Holy Fire disaster recovery process. As a result of the Holy Fire emergency declaration, schools become ready for certification and occupancy following interior and exterior cleaning, replacement of air filters, restoration work, and a rigorous inspection regimen. Students at all LEUSD schools, including those in preschool and childcare programs, will be reminded to report to school starting Monday, August 20.

The start of the 2018/19 school year was postponed one week from August 13, following an emergency meeting of the Board of Trustees on August 10.The school year will not be extended, pending a waiver from the California Department of Education (CDE) as a result of Holy Fire disaster declarations. This means regular school breaks (winter and spring), as well as graduation dates and LEUSD's last day of school will be unchanged.Registration help and enrollment services are available at the District's Enrollment Processing Center, from 8:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. and from 1:00 p.m. - 3 p.m., Monday through Thursday. The Enrollment Processing Center is open weekly, but is closed on Fridays. The Center is located at 545 Chaney St., Bldg. C, Suite B.Because LEUSD schools remain closed to students and the public until August 20, all previously scheduled back to school night events were cancelled this week. School administrators issued notices to parents and guardians via text, voice mail, and email. To date, the Holy Fire has burned nearly 23,000 acres in the Cleveland National Forest, causing mandatory evacuation of thousands of Lake Elsinore residents, and others in the Horsethief Canyon community and unincorporated areas. We thank all first responders, firefighters, the United States Forest Service and supporting resource agencies, the County of Riverside, City of Lake Elsinore, Riverside County Office of Education, Red Cross emergency aid workers, and our community volunteers for their courageous efforts during the Holy Fire!
