Mead Valley Vegetation Fire 90% Contained; 2 People Injured

MEAD VALLEY, CA — A 30-acre brush fire in Mead Valley that injured two people, one critically, was 90% contained Sunday.

"Firefighters made great progress throughout the day strengthening containment lines," Cal Fire said in a statement issued at 5:58 p.m. Saturday.

The Gustin Fire "will remain under patrol for a couple of days," Cal Fire said in a statement issued at 6:15 p.m. Saturday.

The fire was 10% contained, according to the final report issued Friday night. There was no increase in containment reported until Saturday's final update issued at 6:16 p.m. said it was 90% contained.

A vehicle fire broke out around 7:50 p.m. Friday east of Gustin Lane and south of Cajalco Road and spread to surrounding vegetation in the unincorporated community of Mead Valley, southwest of Perris, according to Cal Fire.

One person was taken to a hospital with a minor injury, the agency said. Authorities added Saturday morning that an additional person was hospitalized with critical injuries, but no further details were provided.

Fire crews stopped the progress of the fire around 10:30 p.m. Friday.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
