Motorist Killed In Crash At RivCo Intersection Possibly Inebriated: Police

Witnesses called 911, and patrol officers and city fire department paramedics reached the location in minutes.

CORONA, CA — An autopsy was pending Wednesday on a 64-year-old motorist who was fatally injured in a crash at a Corona intersection that police suspect may have stemmed from driving under the influence.

Robert Benedix of Corona died in the predawn hours on Monday following the wreck at East Sixth Street and Radio Road, according to the Corona Police Department.

The agency said Benedix was traveling westbound on Sixth shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday when he "left the roadway and collided with several electrical boxes and a light pole."

No other vehicles were involved.

Benedix was taken to Riverside Community Hospital, where he was placed on life support. He died as a result of his injuries at 2:25 a.m. Monday, according to the police department.

Investigators believe alcohol and drug impairment may have contributed to the collision. The cause remains under investigation.
