Report: I.E. Tops National Average In Property Tax Obligations

The average property tax bill in Riverside County last year was $4,572.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA — The Inland Empire was among areas of the country where property tax payments for single-family homes exceeded the national average in 2018, according to data published Thursday by a real estate tracking firm.

Attom Data Solutions released its 2018 Property Tax Analysis, showing that last year, the average property taxes for a single-family dwelling nationwide was $3,498, up 3 percent from 2017, when the average stood at $3,399.

The Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario metropolitan area's average residential property tax liability went up 5 percent, according to figures. Markets with similar growth included San Diego, which also saw liabilities rise 5 percent; Tampa, where they were up 4 percent; and Seattle, where they jumped 14 percent, data showed.

The average property tax bill in Riverside County last year was $4,572. The number of single-family units was 543,446, according to Attom.

In San Bernardino County, the average bill was $3,343, and the number of units was 490,789, Attom said.

The highest effective property tax rate was in Binghamton, New York, where the average homeowner paid 3.19 percent based on the assessed valuation of his or her property, according to data. The lowest rate was in Laredo, Texas, where the average homeowner paid the equivalent of .35 percent of the value of the residence to meet property tax obligations, Attom stated.

Cumulatively, $304.6 billion in property taxes was levied on single- family dwellings in 2018, compared to $293.4 billion in 2017, Attom said.
