Shortly before 9:30 p.m. on May 25, the unidentified victim escaped her captor and alerted 911 dispatch operators that Haynes had held her captive against her will for more than two weeks, according to investigators. While hiding in a safe place in Chino, she told authorities that he forced her to "perform multiple sexual acts through fear and coercion" across Southern California, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Jesse Doner.

Through the victim's tip, deputies located Haynes and attempted a traffic stop. He took off, and a cross-county car chase ensued, according to the sheriff's department. Officers followed Haynes from Riverside County to San Diego County and arrested him near Gopher Canyon Road and I-15, ending with a brief foot pursuit.
