Son Tries Killing Elderly Mom With Hacksaw In Canyon Lake

CANYON LAKE, CA — A man who told sheriff's deputies that he tried to kill his mother with a hacksaw in Canyon Lake was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after the woman was found with half of her right foot severed.

Mark Vermillion, 61, was arrested at 5:18 p.m. Thursday in the 30400 block of S. Fork Drive inside the gated community. In addition to attempted murder, he was booked on suspicion of mayhem and harming an elderly dependent adult, jail records show.

Vermillion allegedly called authorities to report his attack. When deputies arrived at the home, they found the elderly woman in the master bedroom with her foot nearly cut off. Deputies immediately performed life saving measures and the woman was hospitalized in stable condition, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department reported.

Vermillion was being held at Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning, with no bail set for him. He is due in court Wednesday, jail records show.
