Vigil To Honor Slain IE Deputy, Who Died In Shooting

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA — The life of San Bernardino County Sheriff's Deputy Andrew Nuñez will be honored at a vigil in Rancho Cucamonga on Wednesday night.

Nuñez, 28, was fatally shot Monday, Oct. 27 while he was responding to a domestic violence call in the city. After the shooting, the suspect fled the scene on a motorcycle, leading deputies on a 150 mph chase until the pursuit ended when an off-duty deputy purposefully crashed into the rider.

While the deputy was pronounced dead by the time he was airlifted to a hospital, the suspect was also hospitalized but was expected to be booked on suspicion of Nuñez's murder.

“Deputy Nunez served with unwavering commitment, courage, and deep compassion for the community he vowed to protect,” the Sheriff’s Department wrote on Monday. “Your watch has concluded, yet your spirit, service, and sacrifice will live on in every life you touched.”

Nuñez served the department for six years. He is survived by his 2-year-old daughter and his wife, who is pregnant with their second child.

The vigil will take place at 6 p.m. at the Rancho Cucamonga Civic Center at 10500 Civic Center Drive.

"Deputy Nuñez honorably served the Rancho Cucamonga community as a member of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, dedicated to protecting and serving our residents with integrity and compassion," the city wrote in a statement. "His commitment and sacrifice will never be forgotten."

"We welcome all who wish to come together in unity and remembrance to honor Deputy Nunez’s life and legacy."
