Zoo Says Spiked Siblings Developing Fine
The female and male porcupines, born July 22 to in-house residents "Skittles" and her mate, "Nasura," are being hand-reared by staff.
The Living Desert’s newest members -- two baby African Crested porcupines -- are receiving special handling and will soon be among the many animals on view at the zoo.
“It’s always fun to welcome new additions to The Living Desert, especially when they’re as fascinating as these animals,” said Allen Monroe, president of The Living Desert.
“Crested porcupines are extremely inquisitive creatures with unique personalities and characteristics,” he said. “We love that about them.”

The female and male porcupines, born July 22 to in-house residents “Skittles” and her mate, “Nasura,” are being hand-reared by staff. After they’ve matured, the brother and sister will be added to the zoo’s educational outreach program.
Seven crested porcupines are currently on display in various exhibits.

The animals can grow to 29 inches long and weigh anywhere from 18 to 51 pounds, covered in quills that can extend out to 20 inches and be used defensively.
