IRVINE, CA — An Orange County man in his 80s lost tens of thousands of dollars in an elaborate scam involving a fake call from the Irvine chief of police, KTLA 5 reported.
The scam started with a single text message sent to the victim.
"This was definitely a unique case where multiple people worked in concert with one another to make this scam more believable," Irvine Police Department spokesperson Ziggy Azarcon told KTLA.
According to the report, the victim spoke to a fake Apple representative, as well as a fake Wells Fargo agent before being patched through to a person who claimed to be the Irvine Chief of Police.
