Lake Forest New Designation Could Reduce Homeowner Insurance Costs, Officials Say

LAKE FOREST, CA — When it comes to fire insurance, most Californians are facing higher rates than ever. Still, living in Lake Forest, a 2026 Fire Risk Reduction community, may save you money, according to Mayor Robert Pequeno.

Recently, in his "Mayor's Minute," Pequeno was joined by the city's Administrative Services Manager, Sharlyn de la Paz, to discuss the new risk-reduction designation and what it might mean for lowering the high cost of homeowners insurance.

"Lake Forest has been named a 2026 Fire Risk Reduction Community by the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection," she said. "That recognizes our local fire planning efforts, and it could mean you qualify for an insurance discount."

The city has suggested you contact your insurance agent and discuss what this designation could mean for your home and family. Each homeowner will have a different set of criteria with their insurance agency, depending on where they live in the community.

"Any available discount will depend on your insurance provider and policy," she said. " The City's designation certificate is available online and at City Hall to help you start the conversation with your insurer."

The designation, effective July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2028, recognizes that Lake Forest meets state-established best practices for local fire planning and risk reduction, according to the city.

Residents are already checking whether they qualify, according to social media comments. One resident stated that her AAA insurance carrier did not offer a discount due to her proximity to Serrano Creek Park.

"There is a designated fire risk due to low maintenance of dead and falling trees," she said. "No discount was available for us."
