IRVINE, CA — Orange County officials attempted a Thursday morning visit to an Irvine office space that has allegedly been leased for Immigration and Customs Enforcement purposes, The Orange County Register reported.
Congressman Dave Min and Irvine Councilmember Melinda Liu — along with their respective staff members — were turned away from the office door after knocking repeatedly.
"There have been reports from other office buildings ICE has leased that they have used those illegally, against local zoning ordinances, to temporarily detain people," Min said. "[There have been reported] that they have refurbished some of the offices into temporary holding cells. And that's the first thing I want to check out."
Both Min and Liu are currently up for re-election in their respective jurisdictions.
"We've been in touch with ICE here and our staff has had a series of communications indicating that we'd like to come by, that I'd like to stop by," Min told the newspaper. "Today was mentioned as a specific date."
