5 Things To Do Labor Day Weekend Near La Mesa

SAN DIEGO — Happy Labor Day! Looking for something fun to do this Labor Day weekend? There are a variety of events happening around San Diego County.

Here's a look at five things to do this weekend:

1. U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge and Dimensional Art Exposition

The eighth annual U.S. Sand Sculpting Challenge and Dimensional Art Exposition will kick off Saturday along Broadway Pier in San Diego. The three-day event will feature a dozen of the best sand sculptors in the world, including artists from the U.S., the Netherlands, Canada, Russia and South Korea. Each sculpture weighs upwards of 10 tons once completed, according to event organizers.

2. Barona Powwow

The 49th annual Barona Powwow kicked off Friday and runs through Sunday at the Barona Sports Park in Lakeside. Join the Barona Band of Mission Indians for a weekend of contest dancing in all categories. Dancers will be competing for tens of thousands of dollars in prize money.

3. KGB Sky Show

The annual KGB Sky Show, deemed "the greatest fireworks show west of the Mississippi," returns Saturday at SDCCU Stadium. The show takes place after the San Diego State Aztecs football game against Weber State Wildcats.

4. Diamond Street Festival

The fifth annual Diamond Street Festival takes place Saturday in the heart of San Diego's Diamond Neighborhoods. The festival celebrates the rich history, diverse cultures and energy of the people of Southeastern San Diego. There will be music, food, a car show and kids zone.

5. SYDRO Music Festival

The inaugural SYDRO Music Festival on Saturday will celebrate the binational culture through art, food and music. There will be a community talent show, soccer tournament, two performance stages, boxing matches, a children's area, border art walk and a tasting from both sides of the border.
