• La Mesa bookstore rejects large orders linked to AI companies (10news.com) — A longtime La Mesa bookstore, Maxwell's House of Books, is turning down thousands of dollars in bulk orders it believes are destined for destructive AI scanning, in order to protect rare and used titles. Owner Craig Maxwell says he's rejected more than $5,000 in recent orders from book brokers tied to AI firms, prioritizing preservation of physical books over profit.
   

• Lamplighters' Theatre presents 'Calendar Girls' Aug. 28-Sept. 20 (eastcountymagazine.org) — Lamplighters' Theatre in La Mesa is staging the feel-good play "Calendar Girls" from August 28 through September 20, with evening and matinee performances on weekends. The show follows Yorkshire women who create a cheeky fundraising calendar, blending humor, grief, and empowerment, and is recommended for ages 13 and up due to mature themes and brief, tastefully handled nudity.
