- An El Cajon man accused of shooting and killing another man in the Grantville neighborhood last month has been arrested in Ohio, police said. Alvin Wilson, 32, is accused in the Sept. 12 shooting of 40-year-old La Mesa resident Jason Twyman, who died three days later in a hospital. (La Mesa-Mount Helix Patch)
- The East County Advanced Water Purification program unveiled a 360-degree virtual reality tour video, allowing viewers to virtually view the program's facilities. Scheduled to be complete in 2025, the program is a partnership between four agencies: Padre Dam Municipal Water District, county of San Diego, city of El Cajon and the Helix Water District. - San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister said his office started mailing more than 1 million 2021-22 secured property tax bills. The first property tax installment is due Nov. 1 and becomes delinquent after Dec. 10. The second installment is due Feb. 1 and becomes delinquent after April 11. (City News Service)
- Two scientists who made molecular developments in California — one in La Jolla — were awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry this morning for their impact on pharmaceutical research. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded Benjamin List, a former student and assistant professor at Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, and David MacMillan, a former student at the University of California, Irvine, and scientist at UC Berkeley and Caltech. - The San Diego County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a comprehensive plan for Afghan refugee housing and resettlement. Supporting a proposal by Supervisor Joel Anderson, the board also directed the county to work with Congress to utilize frozen Taliban assets to pay for Afghan refugee resettlement activities. - San Diego Blood Bank issued an urgent call for blood donations, particularly from type O-positive donors, as supply across the country has reached "dangerously low levels" — an uncommon occurrence for this time of year. (City News Service)
