Blog: La Mesa Back To The '50s Car Show

A Father's Day Surprise 44 Years In The Making - and What's Happening This Week Highlight's from last week's car show and looking forward to this week's car show.

Our first night was packed full of cars and people.  A great turn out. Lots of cruzin' happening all night long.  Having the car show delayed one week made for an even bigger first night.

A special tribute happened just before trophy time.  A family surprised their Dad with a '59 Chevy Impala - the car Dad had lost in 1968 when it was rear-ended and totaled.

DJ, Jumpin' Jack Flash agreed to help the family surprise their Dad by holding a fake raffle at the DJ corner, Palm and La Mesa Blvd., in front of Mr. D's Mini Mart.  The family walked Dad over, decided to buy some tickets to see if they could win the car for him.  As the DJ read off the numbers, which happened to end with '59', Dad realized he had the winning ticket.  The keys were handed to him.  He was numb with surprise.  He just couldn't believe that he had won the car.

By now quite a crowd had gathered to see what was up.  Jumpin' Jack asked Dad to open the trunk, and inside they found a new photo album of Dad's old '59 Impala.  The gig was up.  They explained to Dad in front of 75 or so bystanders that this was his Father's Day gift from his family.  Someone shouted, "I want a family like that!"

How cool that the family chose to do this at our La Mesa Car Show!  La Mesa is a great community, and the car show has been around for 21 years.
