Nestling birds are Dead Today

Yesterday, many nestling birds are killed when trees are cut on 8-acre lot for development. Please enact environmental protections so trees are cut out of nesting season.

Cities like Portland, OR have well-defined guidelines to avoid cutting down trees during the height of the nesting season. http://www.portlandoregon.gov/bes/article/322164

Apparently La Mesa does not.

In La Mesa, the abandoned nursery site has sat vacant for many years on Highland Ave. off of Garfield Street. It was covered in mature trees. As of yesterday, the trees are gone, and realistically, many nestling birds, perhaps hundreds, are dead. This is peak bird nesting season in San Diego and Reynold's Communities, a El Cajon development Corporation, chose this time to cause widespread harm to our native bird population. This lot has been in their possession for many years, and they could have waited until summer or they could have cut down acres of trees in the winter, but they did not, they insensitively chose a time when many baby birds would die. What can we as community members do to prevent more environmental damage of this scale by large companies that obviously do not care about preserving our native animals?
