The Freedom to Disagree!
The Fair Trade proponents have always had every opportunity to see who is willing to join their cause in support as a merchant or consumer.
At least one Fair Trade Resolution proponent seems to have taken hand wringing exceptions to my view on city government involvement in that issue, as evidenced by a self-claimed blog post parody. One great thing in our Constitutional Republic is that anyone can comment on a public figure and my opining in this publication probably places me in that category. So be it!
Another equally great thing is that the City of La Mesa did not, and could not, stop the Fair Trade proponents from rolling up their collective sleeves and using their own resources to market their message far and wide in La Mesa. They have now, as before the council vote, every opportunity to see who is willing to join their cause in support as a merchant or consumer.
Sadly, wasting time and effort on those with opposing views by badgering and issuing personal attacks in anger or in an attempt to gin up widespread seething resentment makes us all a little smaller. Let's hope the energies of the majority of Fair Trade proponents are engaged towards the former and rather than the latter.
