We Are the Moon: God Has Been Speaking to Me Through Sunrises

I was in awe and inspired until some of life's circumstances got me down and I forgot about the beautiful sunrise I had just witnessed.

Psalm 104:19

He made the moon to mark the seasons,
and the sun knows when to go down.

Psalm 136

            His love endures forever.

8 the sun to govern the day,

            His love endures forever.

9 the moon and stars to govern the night;

            His love endures forever.

2 Cor. 3:18

And as the Spirit of the Lord works within us, we become more and more like him and reflect his glory even more.

Last evening as I was taking out the trash I saw the moon rise over the hills of East County.  The song “Harvest Moon” by Neil Young jumped into my head, especially the line, “because I’m still in love with you, I want to see you dance again… on this Harvest Moon.”

I went back to the house to get my wife so we could share in this beautiful and rare occurrence, a harvest moon (Actually it is the hunter moon, the harvest moon was last month but who’s that anal?).  We went back inside and I forgot about the moon until I woke up this morning.

Lately God has been speaking to me through sunrises.  Last week, the day of the rain, was the one of the most glorious dawns I have seen in a long time.  God’s glory was shining in beautiful orange and pink rays through the dark and ominous clouds. There was a double rainbow (no joke) over Corona as the beautiful sunrise guided my commute.

I was in awe and inspired until some of life’s circumstances got me down and I forgot about the beautiful sunrise I had just witnessed.  My commute home sucked and I was miserable until the next morning when God provided another beautiful dawn.  He told me every day is a new beginning and the dawn is full of new promises and opportunities.

That was great, but again by afternoon I was beat up by life’s circumstance.  This seesaw of God’s goodness and beauty and the world’s brutality and ugliness have fostered a very manic past two weeks with very high highs and extremely low lows.  What’s crazy is that even as I try to complete this I am being bombarded with discouragement by life circumstances that are beyond my control.

This has happened every time I have sat down to write the last two weeks. I will try to press on and finish, but the message is not as strong now as it was this morning.

Here is the message God gave me.  I woke up today to a new dawn.  I was excited to see it and then I remembered the moon from last night and wondered if it was still up.  It was and it was more beautiful than ever.  I was driving up the 15 freeway with sun rising on my right and the moon setting on my left.

God told me the church is the moon and Jesus is the Sun (Son?).  Today the church was getting a direct hit from the Son without any interference.  The full moon was a perfect reflection of the sun.  It is the picture of the redeemed, clean and full, fully reflecting the love of God onto Earth. Every month the moon goes through phases just like we do, some days we are full and some days were not visible at all.  The darkness is exposed and flees when we are at full.  We experience fullness when there is nothing blocking our view from the Son so that we can transparently reflect who he is and not who we are. As we rise and set we must always know that the Sun is constant.  Our source never changes, He is always good whether we are experiencing it or not.

Here now then is my prayer: Father please let this truth sink down and let it be an anchor for my anxiety, fear and frustration. Please shine on me completely and let me be a full reflection of who you are regardless of the circumstances going on in my life.  I will praise you in the desert and in the promise land. Please come to my rescue and cover me with your providence. Shine on me completely and let me be full. Amen
