Deputies Open Fire During East County Traffic Stop

A vehicle-theft suspect and a police officer were recovering Thursday from gunshot wounds.

EL CAJON, CA — An undercover deputy and another person were in the hospital Thursday after a task force tailing a suspect resulted in shots fired in El Cajon.

A Lakeside Sheriff's Substation task force followed an unknown male suspect in a van hauling a trailer into a cul-de-sac at Ballard and Decker streets around 10:20 p.m. Wednesday night, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department confirmed.

For reasons unknown, responding El Cajon Police officers fired shots at the suspect, striking a man. The man was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital in an unknown condition.

It was not immediately released what prompted the shootout and authorities did not release what nature of the investigation into the suspect.

The law enforcement officer who was injured was undercover at the time of the incident, ABC 10 reported.

No other information was released. The conditions of the law enforcement officer and the suspect were not released.

El Cajon Police Department was handling the investigation.
