Family Of 8 Displaced In East County Fire

The blaze broke out Monday night in the garage, Heartland Fire & Rescue said.

EL CAJON, CA – A blaze broke out in the garage of an El Cajon home and displaced a family of eight, but firefighters extinguished the fire before it could extend to the home, authorities said Tuesday.

The non-injury blaze was reported around 11:20 p.m. Monday at a residence in the 1500 block of Condor Avenue, Heartland Fire & Rescue spokesman Sonny Saghera said.

Residents in the single-story house were doing laundry when they smelled smoke then went to the garage and saw flames coming out of the back door, Saghera said.

Crews responded to the scene and knocked down the flames within 10 minutes, before the fire extended to the rest of the home, Saghera said. Firefighters had to cut open the garage door to access the flames.

A family of eight lived inside the home, CBS8 reported.
