Fiery, Rollover Crash On Avocado Avenue Sends 4 To Hospital

EL CAJON, CA – Four people were hospitalized Tuesday morning with serious injuries suffered in fiery, rollover crash in El Cajon.

Police and paramedics responded around 9:15 p.m. Monday to reports of a vehicle which had driven into a rock embankment and flipped multiple times in the 1500 block of Avocado Avenue, according to Lt. Stephen Kirk of the El Cajon Police Department.

The first officers who arrived at the scene found a 2008 Toyota minivan engulfed in flames and the four victims, described as being in their mid-to-late teens or early 20s, ejected from the vehicle and lying in the road, Kirk said.

A preliminary investigation, including witness statements, determined the driver of the Toyota was traveling northbound on Avocado Avenue at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the van, left the road and crashed into the rock wall embankment, Kirk said. The vehicle began to roll and all four occupants were ejected.

The vehicle caught fire and the flames spread to a wooden utility pole. Both fires were quickly extinguished by Heartland Fire and Rescue crews, he said.

It was unknown if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.
