Final Splash of League Season: Swimmers Take a Dive for Their Schools
Grossmont High School hosts championships, with Valhalla boys and girls tossing their coach into the pool again to celebrate title.
Helix Charter High School’s Rosa Bebi was the only La Mesa swimmer to finish first in the Grossmont Hills League swim finals Friday afternoon at Grossmont High School, taking the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:07.78. Clare Curran of Grossmont was second in 1:11.20. Bebi also got bronze in the 200 freestyle with a 2:00.89.
Valhalla High School won the team title, with Granite Hills in second place in both boys and girls categories. In the girls division, Helix took third and Grossmont fourth. In the boys division, Grossmont came in fourth and Helix fifth overall.
For Grossmont, bronze medals went to the team of Janelle Shelby, Holly Callahan, Nichole Tex and Clare Curran, 400 yard relay, 3:51.46; Curran, 200 yard IM, 2:15.02; Tex, 500-yard freestyle, 5:20.44, and the team of Caleb Kingsbury, Nathan Bailey, Daniel Dossegger and Ryan Reed, 200-yard medley relay, 1:44.24.

For Helix, silver medals went to the team of Jordan Taylor, Tom Magistrale, Ricky Rager and Joseph Converse, 400-yard freestyle relay, 3:28.87, and bronze medals to the team of Megan Steinbergs, Rosa Bebi, Victoria Nauman and Brittanie Fryling, 200-yard medley relay, 1:57.55.
For West Hills High of Santee, which took sixth in the boys and girls competitions, a silver medal was won by Julia Toronczak in the 100 backstroke, 1:01.88; and bronze medals went to Sam Robbins, 100 breaststroke, 1:02.72; Jessica Lazor, 50 freestyle, 25.79; Luke Davies, 50 freestyle, 23.12; Caleb Davies, 200 freestyle, 1:48.46; and the relay team of Toronczak, Lazor, Jessica Maat and Leah Wynant, 200 freestyle, 1:47.57.

High school coaches will select swimmers for CIF competition, which begins Tuesday.
