Fire Breaks Out Inside El Cajon Market

Heartland Fire & Rescue was dispatched to the blaze just before 3:30 p.m. Friday.

EL CAJON, CA — A two-alarm fire caused extensive smoke damage to an El Cajon market Friday, a fire official said.

Heartland Fire & Rescue units were dispatched at 3:29 p.m. to reports of smoke inside Kaelin's Market in the 1400 block of East Main Street, according to Sonny Saghera, spokesman for Heartland Fire & Rescue.

Fire crews arrived within 4 minutes and confirmed there was smoke coming from inside the single-story commercial building under construction.

The market was open at the time of the fire, but all customers and employees had safely evacuated the building safely prior to fire department arrival.

"A second-alarm was quickly called due to the extreme heat conditions firefighters were facing and the potential of fire spread," Saghera said.

Firefighters discovered the source of the fire when they found cleaning supplies on fire in one of the aisles, he said.

They quickly attacked the fire and had it contained within 20 minutes of arrival.

The fire, which caused extensive smoke damage throughout the building, remained under investigation.

No firefighter or civilian injuries were reported, Saghera said.
