FREE FAMILY ARTS & LITERACY SERIES BEGINS WITH HISPANIC HERITAGE CELEBRATION

Young Audiences of San Diego and The Salvation Army Kroc Center kicks-off it’s 2014-15 Family Arts and Literacy Connection season with a celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month on Thursday, October 16 at 6:30 p.m. This program is part of the free Family Arts and Literacy Connection series held in the multipurpose room at The Salvation Army Kroc Center located at 6605 University Avenue.
This evening’s performance features Mariachi Estrellas de Chula Vista, one of the best mariachi ensembles in the U.S. Under the direction Mark Fogelquist, this ensemble has performed at over 300 events both large and small. Following the performance, the San Diego Guild of Puppetry brings all the materials needed for everyone to make a paper “Animalito” rod puppet. These “animalitos” are based on the bright, fantastical, carved and/or papier mache, folk art animals long famous in the Mexican state of Oaxaca.
All Family Arts and Literacy Connection programs are free to the public. The series engages families in both live performance and hands-on workshops. Each family also receives a free book to take home. October’s book giveaway is “Frida” by author Jonah Winter. “Frida” tells the story of the famous Mexican painter Frida Kahlo.
