La Mesa Gets New Fire Chief In Bent Koch, Fire Chief Swaney Steps Down
La Mesa, El Cajon and Lemon Grove's Heartland Fire and Rescue has brought on their next fire chief

LA MESA, CA — This month, the La Mesa City Council swore in Fire Chief Bent Koch to lead Heartland Fire & Rescue, a consortium with the city of La Mesa, El Cajon and Lemon Grove Fire Departments.
City managers for the three cities made the announcement that Koch would be taking over at the end of 2022. Koch replaces Chief Steve Swaney who retired on Dec. 30, 2022, according to a spokesperson for Heartland Fire & Rescue.
"Chief Koch has moved up the ranks within Heartland Fire & Rescue, most recently as Fire Division Chief," according to a recent news release.

In his previous assignment, Koch led eight fire stations and 110 sworn personnel.
Koch is a graduate of California State University Long Beach, he holds a Master's Degree in Emergency Service Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Studies, among other qualifications. He has played a large role in regional wildland fire training for the past 20 years.

The department bid a fond farewell to Chief Swaney on Instagram, saying:
"We are honored and proud of the work you have done throughout your years of public service. We wish you a long and healthy retirement. Good bye and good luck with all your future endeavors."
