Man Pleads Not Guilty To Murder In La Mesa Trolley Stabbing Death

LA MESA, CA — A man accused of fatally stabbing another man at a La Mesa trolley station pleaded not guilty Thursday to a murder charge.

La Mesa police responded around 8:40 p.m. to a report of a man down and found the victim with a stab wound to his chest.

The 47-year-old victim was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where he died a short time later. A criminal complaint filed against Calhoun identifies the victim as Troy Schwartz.
The suspect's picture was shared with the public in hopes of locating the assailant and police said multiple tips came in following the release of the photo.

Calhoun was arrested two days later in downtown San Diego, according to police.
It was unclear what relationship, if any, existed between Calhoun and the victim.
Calhoun faces up to 26 years to life in state prison if convicted of murder, plus an allegation of using a knife in the slaying. Calhoun, who remains in custody without bail, has prior San Diego County convictions for assault and robbery, according to the complaint.
