Man Who Died After Wooden Shed Collapse Behind La Mesa Home ID'd

LA MESA, CA – Authorities Wednesday identified a 33-year-old man who was fatally injured when a wooden shed collapsed on him in an East County neighborhood last week.

Jonathan Paul Sandoval of Lakeside died Sunday night at Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, four days after he was buried under the debris, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.

Sandoval was dismantling outbuildings for removal behind a home in the 9100 block of Johnson Drive in La Mesa when the accident occurred shortly after 1:30 p.m. on Oct. 10, said Sonny Saghera, spokesman for Heartland Fire & Rescue.

Emergency personnel pulled Sandoval out of the collapsed structure, which took about five minutes, and then began performing CPR, Saghera said.

Paramedics continued the lifesaving efforts while transporting Sandoval to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, restoring his pulse by the time they arrived at the facility, Saghera said.

While hospitalized, Sandoval's condition declined and he was pronounced dead at 6:40 p.m. Sunday, according to the Medical Examiner's Office.

Sandoval, who went by his middle name, was married and the father of three boys, ages 5, 3 and a baby of 4 months, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

A GoFundMe.com donation page set up to help his family had raised over $24,000 as of Wednesday morning.
