Matthew Januszek of Escape Fitness with insights from Frank Zane

Escape's Matthew Januszek gathers 10 lift-changing insights all exercise enthusiasts need in his interview with 3X Mr. Olympia Frank Zane.

Through a stroke of luck, Matthew Januszek, co-founder of Escape Fitness, had the chance to have a wisdom-packed sit down with none other than living legend Frank Zane.

A three-time Mr. Olympia, three-time Mr. Universe, Mr. World and Mr. America, throughout his career Frank Zane has been highly regarded as a paragon of aesthetics and physical proportion. Inducted into both the Bodybuilding Hall of Fame and the Muscle Beach Hall of Fame, he is one of only three people in the history of professional bodybuilding ever to have defeated Arnold Schwarzenegger. He is the Master.

Much of what Matthew discovered was profound beyond his expectations having seemingly nothing yet absolutely EVERYTHING to do with bodybuilding and achieving one’s best over the course of a lifetime.

Here are the 10 lift-changing takeaways Frank Zane imparted that every fitness enthusiast whether novice, amateur or pro will benefit from:

  1. Don’t wait for someone else to tell you that you can do it, or that you have everything it takes. No one in the entire world can believe in you and you can still achieve your goals if you believe in you.
  2. You have to be real with your expectations. There is a “what’s best for you” given your genetics, bone structure and metabolism. It’s your job to work hard to learn it.
  3. Be present for every move for every workout. Even when it gets tedious.
  4. There are no shortcuts. And, that means no performance-enhancing drugs.
  5. Success = effort during workouts + attitude + recuperation + nutrition
  6. There’s no such thing as being, only becoming.
  7. Find a positive mantra you can use to set your intention. And, use it multiple times every day. Frank estimates he has said his mantra nearly 30 million times over the course of his lifetime.
  8. Cut out negative body metaphors – they’ll never serve you. And could even manifest problems with your health you don’t intend. For example, stop saying that’s a pain in the neck or that kills me. There are numerous other negative body metaphors and none of them are healthy.
  9. Use bodybuilding to complete your character, not as a way to armor up.
  10. Take your training to a place of beyond effort.

Frank Zane shared more wisdom beyond these gold nuggets in the hour-long interview, including details on his new book Zane Bodybuilding Manual, which he calls the ultimate reference.
