Plugging Along: Environmental Fest Will Show How to Convert Your Car

Fourth annual Sustain La Mesa Environmental event on Saturday will showcase nearly 50 exhibits.

Even with fuel prices bouncing around $4 a gallon, it’s hard to justify buying an electric vehicle when your gas- or diesel-driven one is running just fine. But this weekend will show another option.

Fostering sustainable living, the city is hosting its annual Sustain La Mesa Environmental Festival where—in addition to recycling, energy rebates and vertical greenery—visitors will see an exhibit showcasing automotive conversion technology.

“It’s run by a gentleman who’s involved with the Electric Vehicle Association of San Diego,” said Scott Munzenmaier, an administrative analyst for the city. “They’re all cars that weren’t electric cars initially … but were converted to electric cars.”

Now in its fourth year, the festival runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, at . The event has the following zones:

  • Energy
  • Horticulture and Habitat
  • Kids
  • EDCO Recycling
  • Community
  • Food

“It’s gotten bigger each year, so at this point we’re going to have close to 50 exhibits,” Munzenmaier said. “If you’ve got a particular interest and kind of spend time in one zone, you can feed that interest.”
