The political football—better known as the government shut-down—became a reality at 0001 hours on October 1st. Had either potential funding loss or impending furloughs been impediments to putting on the Air Show, rest assured that the Commanding Officer, MCAS Miramar, would have long ago made the decision to cancel this year's show.
Given that the profit (this year's projected to be less than last years $1.5 million) goes to the bases internal morale and welfare efforts—much of which is allocated to the base's day care center—it can only be assumed that: a) either someone failed to do their homework; or, b) those who issued the order to cancel the air show simply don't give a damn about the troops or their dependents -- they being the biggest losers in this terribly misguided political fiasco.
For the record: It was an assistant secretary of defense at DOD who directed the CO of MCAS Miramar to shut down the Air Show. In that DOD is in the Executive Branch of government's chain of command, it is reasonable to assume that the order to shut down the air show came from the White House.
