Tennis Anyone? Kids With Big-Time Dreams Can Try Pint-Sized Courts

The city is hosting a Play Day for its new 10 and Under program Saturday at La Mesita Park.

In the not-too-distant past, Karen Ronney was the No. 1 tennis player for Cal State Northridge in the NCAA finals―quite a feat given her one-size-fits-all introduction to the sport.

“I grew up when tennis didn’t have these things,” Ronney said of ’s modified courts and equipment that make it easier for children to learn the sport. “If you were a beginner, you were put up against top players, and you had no chance.”

Now Ronney is a coach—with hopes and help.

Sponsored by American Express and the U.S. Tennis Association, the local courts provide a more rewarding experience for young beginners and put East County on the map, Ronney says.

Less than half the standard length, the courts also employ several types of balls to train with―including a foam one that’s slower to bounce and move.

“We lose 80 percent of the kids who pick up a racket 8 and under,” Ronney said. “Here are smaller balls and smaller courts and lighter rackets. Because of that, it makes it easier for kids to play tennis.”

The courts , but at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, La Mesa is hosting Play Day, a series of games led by Ronney that will introduce its 10 and Under Tennis programs. The event is free. For more information, call 619-667-1300.
