WHAT: Members of the community will gather
Sunday to learn about and discuss the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement, a
controversial Free Trade Agreement that is currently being negotiated with Canada, Mexico,
Japan, Malaysia, Brunei,
Vietnam, Australia, Chile,
Peru, New Zealand and Singapore. While proponents of the TPP claim that it
will open market access for American businesses while improving the economy,
critics say it will have detrimental effects not only for businesses and the
economy, but also for labor, the environment, consumer regulation, intellectual
property rights, and humans rights, and that the TPP will also threaten “Buy
America” or “Buy Local” government procurement programs.
The Obama administration wants to
use Fast Track Trade authority legislation to avoid having the TPP scrutinized
by Congress before being passed, which will likely be presented in the upcoming
lame duck session of Congress after the November 2014 elections.
