Lafayette Meeting For Feedback On Downtown Murals

Community workshop for gathering public feedback on artists, designs, and the future of Lafayette's growing downtown public art program.

LAMORINDA, CA — Lafayette has been expanding a program that will shape what the walls of the city will bear.

Few things can spark a burning in a city debate like public art, be it a statue or a mural.

In a move that could help prevent such debates, Lafayette officials are asking residents to help shape the next chapter of the city's expanding downtown murals initiative during a public workshop this month.

Community members will have an opportunity to review plans for the program, learn about artists under consideration for the next mural, and offer feedback that could influence future public art installations throughout downtown.

City leaders launched the Downtown Murals Program as part of a broader effort to support local arts, strengthen downtown vitality, and create public spaces that inspire residents and visitors. The city has committed to installing four outdoor murals in the downtown area.

The first mural in the series, Matilija Sky by Lafayette artist Rachel Perls, debuted late last year on the wall of Zahra Boutique Salon in the 3500 block of Mt. Diablo Boulevard.

During the June 24 workshop, committee members will provide updates on the program, discuss potential muralists for the second installation, and gather ideas from residents as planning moves forward.

Officials encourage community members to attend, share their perspectives, and help guide the future of public art in downtown Lafayette. Residents can also learn more about the Downtown Murals Program through city resources.

The Public Art Committee will host the workshop from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 24, at City Offices, 3675 Mt. Diablo Blvd., Room 240.
