LAMORINDA, CA — Firefighters will ignite a prescribed burn Tuesday morning on Carroll Ridge as local fire agencies continues annual efforts to reduce wildfire fuels before peak fire season.
The burn will begin at approximately 10 a.m. and is expected to conclude by 1 p.m., according to the Moraga-Orinda Fire Protection District.
Fire crews will treat about three acres along the ridge north of Rheem Boulevard, where they are creating and maintaining a strategic fuel break designed to slow the spread of future wildfires. Residents can watch the operation live.
Fire district officials said fuel breaks play a critical role in wildfire preparedness by improving evacuation routes, giving firefighters safer places to work during fast-moving fires, and helping restore and maintain native grassland ecosystems.
The district is coordinating the operation with the Town of Moraga and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District to ensure the burn is conducted safely while minimizing impacts on nearby neighborhoods.
Residents living near Carroll Ridge, including the Campolindo neighborhood, should expect to see smoke and fire activity during the operation. Officials recommend keeping windows and doors closed while the burn is underway to reduce exposure to smoke.
Motorists traveling on Moraga Road and Rheem Boulevard also may see smoky conditions during the morning.
The prescribed fire will proceed only if weather and fuel conditions remain favorable. If conditions change, the fire agency will postpone the operation.
