LAMORINDA, CA — Local barbecue chefs will fire up their smokers, serve signature recipes, and compete for bragging rights Saturday as the second annual Moraga Rib Throwdown returns to Canyon Club Brewery to raise money for Moraga's public schools.
Organizers invite families, friends, neighbors, and barbecue fans to enjoy an afternoon of friendly, unsanctioned competition while supporting local education.
All proceeds will benefit the Moraga Education Foundation, which funds programs for Camino Pablo Elementary School, Los Perales Elementary School, Donald L. Rheem Elementary School, Joaquin Moraga Intermediate School, and Campolindo High School.
Self-described "food freak" and product developer Jon Ruiz will host the event, which encourages guests to sample and share barbecue from competing cooks. Organizers said that everyone is welcome, even without purchasing a ticket.
The Rib Throwdown, now in its second year, has grown into one of the Moraga Education Foundation's signature fundraising events, combining local food, neighborhood camaraderie, and school support in a relaxed setting.
Advance tasting tickets are available with menu options ranging from about $32 to $131, although admission to the event itself is free. Guests who do not purchase tickets may still attend, watch the competition, and enjoy the community gathering.
Organizers also welcome sponsorship inquiries and encourage attendees to follow the event on Instagram for updates leading up to the competition.
The Moraga Rib Throwdown will take place Saturday, Aug. 29, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Canyon Club Brewery, 1558 Canyon Road in Moraga.
