Meadow Swim and Tennis Club in Orinda to Host the 42nd Annual Mini-Meet

Lamorinda swimmers ages 8 and under will participate in the upcoming “Meadow Mini-Meet” to be held on Sunday, July 15, 2012 at Meadow Swim and Tennis Club in Orinda. Co-chaired for a second year by Meadow volunteers Kellie Williams and Sarah Cunningham, this annual event began in 1970 and is one of the most popular swim meets of the summer for the 8 and under crowd.  Swimming events for all participants will include the 25 yard freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly with the 6 and under events starting promptly at 9:00am and the 7 and 8 year old events at 1:30pm.

Meadow hosts several Lamorinda swim clubs at the meet including the Campolindo Cabana Club, Miramonte Swim Team, Moraga Country Club, Moraga Ranch Swim and Tennis Club, Moraga Valley Pool, Orinda Country Club, Orinda Park Pool, and Sleepy Hollow Swim and Tennis Club. Approximately 600-700 swimmers participate and over 1500 people attend the meet. Last year’s race even included two three-year-olds.

This year’s meet will include a catered lunch by a local taco truck and vendors such as Loard’s Ice Cream, Mystify Me (airbrush tattoos and hair braiding), Nor Ski Sports of Lafayette, and Chillers Smoothies of Orinda will be on hand to ensure a festive day. A new vendor this year is My Little Nuggets, custom hair accessories for women and girls designed by local Orinda mom Doray Briskman. Volunteers for the meet will include many Meadow “9 and up” swimmers who are there to show their support for their younger peers.

“The great thing about this particular meet is that it’s so much fun and every child feels like a winner.” says Kellie Williams, co-chair of this year’s Mini Meet. “This meet is designed specifically for the younger swimmers and each child competes against other s their same age—so a six-year-old will swim against a six-year-old—as opposed to being categorized as a “8 and under”— the playing field is even for them. Not to mention each child receives a participation ribbon.”

Trophies will be provided to the top three teams overall. Last year Sleepy Hollow Swim and Tennis Club went home in first place, Meadow Swim and Tennis Club came in second with Orinda Country Club coming in third.
