Annual Swim Championship Closes the Recreational Season In Moraga
More than 1,800 swimmers. Eighty four events. Three days. Now the cars are clean, the 'gators and shark fins are stored away until next season.
The 55th annual Orinda Moraga Pool Association championship meet concluded Sunday night with Orinda Country Club swimming to a first-place finish. Meadow Swim and Tennis Club scored second and the Sleepy Hollow Legends rounded out the top three.
Moraga Country Club placed fourth; Moraga Valley Pool placed fifth and Moraga Ranch Swim Team swam to a sixth-place finish. Orinda Park Pool placed seventh, Campo Cabana Club came in eighth and Miramonte Swim Team scored ninth during three days of competition at Campolindo's Soda Aquatic Center.

- Sophia Kosturos of Orinda Country Club setting a new record for 9-10 girls in the 50 yard freestyle of 27.14 seconds, beating her record-setting preliminary time of 27.45 from that morning. The previous record of 27.71 seconds was set in 1982 by Elaine Wegand of Meadow.
- Dana Holt of Moraga Country Club setting a new record of 52.24 seconds in the 15-18 girls 100 yard freestyle race, beating her record-breaking 52.73 from her preliminary swim that morning. The previous record was 52.87 by Meredith White of Sleepy Hollow.
- Charlie Wiser of Orinda Country Club setting a new record of 25.83 seconds for 50-yard 15-18 boys breaststroke, beating his record-setting preliminary swim of 26.62 seconds. The previous record of 27.04 was set in 1992 by Michael Gotelli of Meadow.
- The 9-10 girls Orinda Country Club 200 yard medley relay team of Ryan Hagglund, Lauren McAninch, Sophia Kosturos and Eloise Eng setting a new record of 2:13.39 seconds.
- The 13-14 boys Campolindo Cabana Club 200 yard medley relay team of Steven Wescott, Tyler Bartis, Scott Zurnacian and Marty Cunnane setting a new record of 1:47.98 seconds.
- Megan Colpo of Moraga Valley Pool, swimming in the 9-10 age group, setting a record for 50-yard backstroke with a swim of 31.39 seconds.
- 13-14 boys free relay team of Tommy Bush, Tommy Baier, Tommy Larsen and Henry Baer from Orinda Country Club setting a free relay record of 1:35.07 for the 200-yard race.
The awards concluded with Outstanding Swimmer Awards presented to Megan Colpo and Charlie Wiser. Campolindo Cabana Club won the Heidary Sportsmanship Trophy for demonstrating sportsmanlike behavior in the water, in the stands and among the coaches.
