Donations Matched For Harvey Ranch Property Purchase
If you would like to see the land near Saint Mary's College preserved, now's your chance to make a difference.
LAMORINDA, CA ā The John Muir Land Trust says it has a commitment from two donors to match funds it raises for the rest of the year ā up to $25,000 ā to go toward the purchase of the Harvey Ranch property near Saint Mary's College.
The Martinez-based preservation group is working to buy and preserve the 143 acres near the Moraga college, land the group calls a gateway to Las Trampas Wilderness and the San Leandro Watershed in the hills beyond.
The trust said longtime supporters Dave and Janice Hammond will match donations up to $25,000 the trust collects until Dec. 31.

"Right now, we have a collective opportunity to save an East Bay landscape recognized as a conservation milestone ā a gem to be spared from the relentless pressure to develop," the group said in a press release. "A few minutes spent in daily traffic on the once-rural roads of Lamorinda make it clear the area is booming. And while residential development is needed and inevitable, it must be done in sensible places."
The trust said the land provides essential habitat for the threatened Alameda whipsnake and California red-legged frog, and harbors everything from gray foxes and jackrabbits to weasels and bobcats.
