Early Returns Show Glazer, Smith Lead in Orinda

A crowd of 80 was applauding tentatively at 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Europa Hofbrau in Orinda as preliminary results had candidates in attendance leading.

One of those was the dignitary announcing the early results with the help of his iPad, incumbent Mayor Steve Glazer. Alongside him was incumbent Council member Victoria Smith, who was running second in the race for two council seats. Running third was challenger Linda Delehunt.

"We get to experience our democracy close and personal," said Glazer, referring to the "unity celebration" held at Europa in which all local candidates were invited.

Glazer, on the council since 2004, found the campaign "civilized and meaningful. I thought the interchange was constructive. I give it a positive for good civic engagement."

With three precincts counted, the results showed Orindans supporting Measure L, a sales tax measure for road improvements, by 69 percent yes.

At the Europa was Cassandra Forth, who co-chaired the committee for Measure L with Darlene Gee. "It's wonderful for Orinda," said Forth. "It's a great start.

Early results shoed Matt Moran and Sarah Butler in the first two positions for the Orinda school board. Both attended the Europa event.
