Famed violinist Midori writes: “The challenge for the Debussy Violin Sonata is the collaboration of senses and spirit. Unlike sonatas from earlier periods, or other sonatas of Debussy's time, the two instruments do not accompany each other per se; rather, one instrument leads with a pulling energy against the counter melody or motif of the other. Ultimately, this creates a different kind of sonority and texture; the two instruments challenge one another but their arguments ultimately bring them closer together.”

The Shostakovich piano quintet is a rare, thought-provoking work. Even a first hearing leaves listeners with the uncanny sense that they already know this work well, and that they have heard something significant. At the same time one is struck with the quintet's originality; nothing sounds hackneyed and Shostakovich’s score comes across as fresh and immediate.

J.S. Bach’s influence on Shostakovich was tremendous. The choice to begin the program with his fifth cello suite will offer the listener a foundation for the entire program.
