Fire Operation Today Around Lamorinda

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — Residents near around Lafayette may notice smoke in the air today as Contra Costa Fire crews carry out a burn ahead of the region's most precarious fire weather.

Contra Costa Fire crews will start the burn operation in Hunsaker Canyon at 9 a.m. today, targeting between 2 and 2.5 acres as part of an effort to reduce wildfire threats and manage landscape conditions.

Contra Costa Fire regularly uses prescribed burns to reduce vegetation that can fuel fast-moving wildfires, helping firefighters create safer conditions before the height of fire season.

Fire officials said the planned burn will reduce flammable brush, eliminate invasive plant species, and help lower fire risks during future "Red Flag" weather events.

Light smoke may be visible in nearby neighborhoods while crews conduct the operation. Officials advised residents who are sensitive to smoke to keep windows and doors closed and limit outdoor activity until the burn is over.

Fire officials said the smoke is expected and is part of a controlled operation. Residents who see smoke within the designated burn area should not to call 911, as firefighters are on scene managing the burn.

However, any smoke or flames spotted outside the planned burn area, or any activity that appears unusual, should be reported immediately by calling 911.
