Football: Campolindo Remains Undefeated; Trounces Dublin, 42-13

Campolindo scores touchdowns on five of their first six first half drives to put Dublin away early.

The Star: Campolindo quarterback Brett Stephens showed off pinpoint accuracy and a cannon arm, throwing for four touchdowns, three in the first quarter. He connected twice with receiver Mason Windatt on scores of 32 and 41 yards. Windatt broke several tackles down the field on both catches before crossing the goal line.

The Turning Point: Dublin started the game strong with an eight play, 66-yard drive that resulted in touchdown. On the ensuing possession, the Gaels forced the Cougars to go 3-and-out. On Dublin’s first play after the punt, the Gaels' Ondre Rudolph coughed up a fumble, which was recovered by Campolindo. On the Cougars first play after the recovery, Stephens found Dan Fadelli for the 28-yard scoring strike. It only took Campo one pass to catch their rhythm. The team proceeded to score four touchdowns on their next four possessions, pushing the game out of Dublin’s reach.

Campolindo’s first-half offensive explosion put the Gaels in a deep hole early, trailing 35-13 at half. The Cougars defense shut out Dublin’s offense in the second half, allowing Campo to cruise to a 42-13 victory while improving their season record to a perfect, 7-0 in Moraga, Friday night.

Campolindo’s confidence is booming.

The Gaels have racked up 84 points, while only allowing 20 the past two weeks and they are peaking at just the right time with all important conference games against undefeated Miramonte and 5-1 Las Lomas around the corner.

“We think we have something special, but Miramonte won tonight and they are undefeated as well. That is going to be a monster game next week (against the Mats),” said Campo quarterback Brett Stephens. “They have Ross Anderson at quarterback, who is probably the best player in the league and several other weapons at tight end and wide receiver.”

Stephens and company are clicking on all cylinders. The offensive line, a group of players converted from other positions, are beginning to dominate and giving Stephens plenty of time to find his playmakers.

“Our offensive line has been a surprise and played really solid for us,” said Campo coach Kevin Macy. “The defense has been fighting week in and week out. We were picked last in our league, so we are not going to get too full of ourselves.”

Dublin dropped to 4-2 on the season and even in defeat proved effective at moving the sticks with a potent running attack buoyed by quarterback Edward Achziger and Ondre Rudolph (two touchdowns). Both players eclipsed the 100-yard mark against a stingy Cougars defense. However, the Gaels had little success throwing the football.

Dublin fell victim to a ball hawking Cougars secondary, made up of standout corners Dan Fadelli, JJ Ewing and safety Griffin Piatt. Piatt and Ewing both picked off Achziger passes and Ewing returned his 36 yards for a touchdown.

“We are a work in progress. We thought we would have a pretty good chance tonight,” remarked Dublin coach John Wade. “We started off the game strong but made some mistakes. They are a good football team. Stephens is one of the best quarterbacks I have seen in a while throwing the football and his receivers are making catches.”

Macy was equally impressed with his signal-caller.

“[Stephens] was sharp. He had everything on the money and the ball was coming out of his hand so smooth.”

Wide receiver Mason Windatt had a pair of highlight catches for touchdowns and teammates Fadelli and Karl Thornton also found the end zone on scoring throws.

“We have been healthy all season and that is so important. We are not very big (at any position) and thin,” added Macy of his teams’ lack of depth.

Campo’s middle linebacker Jamie Vega was stout against the run and will most likely be assigned with spying Miramonte’s dual threat Anderson, in their much anticipated match-up next week.

Note: Get to Campo early next week for the cross-town rivalry game. The parking lot was completely full for tonight’s homecoming contest and will certainly be at capacity next week.
