LAFAYETTE, CA ā A grass fire in Lafayette was quickly doused Thursday afternoon. It burned dangerously close to homes but no homes were lost.
"The structures that were threatened were protected because we were able to hit it with rapid and overwhelming force to keep small fires small," Contra Costa County Fire Protection District spokesman Steve Hill said.
Several drivers spotted smoke from Highway 24 and Interstate Highway 680, and called 911.

"The name of the game is to keep these fires from getting away from us," Hill said.
"Today we were on our game and kept it small, but I would quickly add that we have a lot of fuel out there, probably 200 percent of what we had last year," Hill said. "We could definitely use the help of every single person in the county to be ultra-careful in all their outdoor activities."

No injuries were reported.
All roads in the area have reopened.
