🇺🇸 Honoring Lona and Norman Molyneaux — Lafayette’s WWII Veterans 🇺🇸
As we prepare for Wreaths Across America on Saturday, December 13 at noon at Lafayette Cemetery, the Acalanes Chapter DAR honors two Lafayette veterans — Lona Louise Molyneaux (McLellan) and Norman Molyneaux — who proudly served our nation during World War II.
Lona Molyneaux was among the first women to step forward in Los Angeles, becoming the first woman in the city to enlist in the U.S. Coast Guard Women’s Reserve (SPARS). At a time when few women wore a uniform, she answered her country’s call, serving in a groundbreaking role that helped pave the way for future generations of women in the armed forces.
Her husband, Lt. Norman Molyneaux, served in the U.S. Naval Reserves in the Pacific Theater. As Commanding Officer of the LCI 28 and later the LCS 96, he led amphibious landing craft operations and was among the American occupation forces in Hiroshima following Japan’s surrender. His leadership and dedication reflected the courage and sense of duty shared by so many of his generation.
Both veterans rest at Lafayette Cemetery, among nearly 350 men and women who served. On December 13, volunteers will place a wreath on each veteran’s headstone and speak every name aloud, ensuring their legacy of service is never forgotten.
