Lafayette Cyclists Get "Sharrows" and Designated Bikeways
Lamorindans who get around on two wheels haven't been catching many breaks lately, losing out in collisions with their four-wheeled counterparts. Lafayette hopes some new signage will help even the odds a bit.
Lafayette city leaders are trying to make it easier for residents who get around on two wheels and muscle-power by adding directional and head's-up signage to help guide cyclists around town.
Highly visible pictograms known as "sharrows" - painted on street surfaces - and a total of 93 signs are being erected at strategic spots around town.
"We want to make Lafayette more welcoming to cyclists of all ages and types," said Matt Luttropp, an associate engineer for the city assigned to oversee the project. Funded entirely by a $46,000 state grant, the project is meant to make riding through town safer for cyclists and motorists alike.

Luttropp, who describes himself as a "casual" cyclist ("I go out with my kids.") says the job has been awarded to a private contractor. Signs are going up as we speak.
