Lafayette Gets Rid of Some Road Bumps, May Add Others

Lafayette sets out to repair one old country road and slow people down on another.

We're not sure if Lafayette remembers the absolute furor that erupted in neighboring Moraga when the town approved "speed tables" for Camino Pablo, but civic leaders in Lafayette are asking residents in the Reliez Station Road neighborhood if they want "speed humps."

Residents are voting on whether to implement a traffic calming program in their neighborhood, City Manager Steven Falk reports, and if the vote is successful "speed humps" could go in on a stretch of Reliez Station Road north of Olympic.

"Ballots are due back to the city in the first part of August," Steven says, so we'll hear then how residents feel about the traffic calming measure.  You may remember that Moraga installed three "speed tables" on Camino Pablo in an effort to curtail speeding on that street – only to have two of the three traffic calming devices removed in the face of intense community pressure.

While speed humps go from curb to curb, speed tables do not, leaving room for vehicles to circumvent them, according to this explanation of traffic-calming options.

And if you prefer the backroads of Lafayette to its thoroughfares, you'll no doubt have noticed that the city is repairing Michael Lane near Glenside, with new asphalt going in early next week.

"We also completed the resurfacing of North Buchan and sections of Old Tunnel Road and Brook Street," Steven says.

Caution flags and cones are out for utility work under way in earnest on Monroe Avenue in preparation for the reconstruction of that road.  And road work has also started on Garden Lane, and will soon commence on Cordova Way.

"The summer construction season is in full swing," Steven says.
