Lafayette Maps A Move On Trail Trespassing Wednesday

Trespassing, trail markers, and maintenance are on the agenda of Wednesday's Lafayette Trails Subcommittee meeting.

LAMORINDA, CA — How to block unauthorized bike access on Lafayette trains — and how to mark them — is on the discussion agenda Wednesday when the Trails Subcommittee meets.

The committee will tackle signage gaps, maintenance backlogs, and lingering easement questions across the city’s trail network.

At the top of the agenda: new markers along the Moraga Road-to-Reservoir Rim Trail and on Rose Lane. Members will review plans to install the first post marker for the Moraga Road segment near the corner of Via Granda and Moraga Road, a key entry point that currently lacks clear identification, according to an agenda report.

On Rose Lane, the subcommittee will consider adding markers at both the beginning and end of the trail. The route now has a single turnout just before a switchback where some cyclists divert onto an old social easement on private property without legal access. City staff say they cannot support use of unauthorized trails and will discuss blocking the informal path and posting signs to clarify that the full trail is not open to bikes.

Members will also review completed trail inspections and individual trail reports, discuss maintenance requests and hear an update on volunteer efforts, including Scout-led projects.

The panel plans to examine proposed trail projects, assess budget expenditures and weigh next steps on trail easements and related development referrals. The meeting will close with a brief discussion of the city’s broader Lafayette Trails Plan.

The Lafayette Trails Subcommittee begins 7 p.m. on March 4 in the Alder Room at the Lafayette Community Center, 500 Saint Mary’s Road.
