Lamorinda Students Invited to Enter DAR American History Essay Contest

The Acalanes Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) invites local students in grades 5–8 to participate in the annual DAR American History Essay Contest, a national competition designed to bring history to life.

This Year’s Question

“To announce independence from Great Britain, the Declaration of Independence was publicly read in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776. Imagine you lived in Philadelphia or in an area where news did not reach you for weeks. How would you react to hearing the Declaration read in your community? With whom would you share the news? What action would you take? How would it impact your life?”

Students are invited to imagine themselves living in 1776 and to consider what it might have felt like to hear the news of independence for the first time. The essay encourages students to combine historical understanding with thoughtful reflection and creativity.

One winner per grade level will be selected by the Acalanes Chapter DAR and advanced to district and state-level competition.

The contest is open to students in grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 enrolled in public, private, or homeschool programs in our community.

Essay length:

• Grade 5: 300–600 words
• Grades 6–8: 600–1,000 words

Submission deadline: October 15, 2026

Teachers and parents are encouraged to share this opportunity with students. The contest offers a meaningful way to explore the American Revolution while developing research, writing, and critical-thinking skills.
