Machine Gun With Grenade Launcher, More Weapons, Seized

A Contra Costa County-based anti-violence task force made the seizure and one arrest.

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — A fearsome arsenal including a machine gun with an attached silencer and grenade launcher was seized by a Contra Costa County-based anti-violence task force. The investigation started with a tip that a man obtained Glock conversion switches, which allows pistols to fire in a fully automatic mode. It ended with a man behind bars and the arsenal in the possession of law enforcement.

The investigation was conducted by CASE, Contra Costa County Anti-Violence Support Effort, with participating agencies: Office of the Sheriff; California Department of Justice; California Highway Patrol; Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; Pittsburg Police Department; and Probation Officers from the Contra Costa County Probation Department.

Investigators zeroed-in on 41-year-old Joseph Holmes of Foster City. Last Thursday he was arrested and the following weapons were seized at his home:

  • Glock converter switches (4)
  • 5.56 caliber AR-15 style assault rifles (3)
  • 5.56 caliber machine gun with an attached silencer and grenade launcher
  • 9mm assault pistol (2)
  • 37mm incendiary rounds (2)
  • Large capacity magazines (23)

Holmes was arrested on suspicion of possession of a machine gun, possession of an assault
rifle, manufacturing an assault rifle, possession of a silencer, possession of a destructive device, illegal transfer of a firearm, importation of large capacity magazines and possession of an explosive agent.
