But in a season that — in Rose's eyes — is a rebuilding year, he knows it's a question of how much his young Matadors can learn in a short time span. Either way, he wants a team that won't quit regardless of what obstacles may stand in its way.
"It's my personal feeling, as a coach, and it's somewhat of a selfish request, but I want a team that won't give up," he said.

Rose has already seen that some of his girls have heart.
While coaching the Lamorinda Water Polo 18-and-under team at a club tournament in Los Angeles the team fell behind big early but didn't give up. Although they lost, both he and his team got commended by their opponents and the referees for simply not rolling over. They were the only first-year team at that tournament.
With the team coming off a season in which it bowed out in the third round of the North Coast Section playoffs, Rose knows his team can do better this season.
Rose expects his three captains, Sierra Robbins, Molly Schoenfeld and Margaux Attard to lead the team, and have it connect with the right chemistry in the pool.
He also pointed to a key matchup with Monte Vista early in the season as a good marking point to see how far his team's progressed. He also mentioned potential big games later in the season with Acalanes and Campolindo.
"Any of those are games we can win and should win," Rose said. "It's just a matter of how far we can progress by that time. But I'm looking ahead."
Rose is eager to play league games in the Diablo Foothill Athletic League, which has now been split into two divisions. Miramonte has been placed in Division I, the divison for schools with more than 1,700 students.
